Joliette is a Canadian city in Quebec, the county seat of the Joliette Regional County Municipality (MRC), in the Lanaudière region. It is the sixth largest city in Lanaudière.

Barthélemy Joliette named the area L'Industrie (Industry), as he envisioned transforming this village into a major industrial center. Upon its incorporation in 1864, the new town adopted the name Joliette in recognition of its founder's contributions. Designated a city in 1918, it merged with Joliette-Sud in 1966, which had been established in 1957, and received its current city status in 1981.

The city of Joliette is located in the St. Lawrence Lowlands. The climatic conditions of the St. Lawrence Lowlands have several impacts on the population. The average annual temperature is 5°C, resulting in a longer growing season than in other regions. The L'Assomption River meanders through the city from north to south.

The city is divided into eight sectors :

  • Bélair and Christ-Roi West;
  • Christ-Roi East;
  • City Center East;
  • Sainte-Thérèse;
  • Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Carrefour-du-Moulin East;
  • Saint-Pierre South and Carrefour-du-Moulin West;
  • Saint-Pierre North;
  • City Center West.
