Sud-Ouest is a borough of the city of Montreal, Quebec, located southwest of downtown Montreal, hence its name. It is made up of six neighbourhoods: Côte-Saint-Paul, Griffintown, Little Burgundy, Pointe-Saint-Charles, Saint-Henri and Ville-Émard.
Covering an area of 15.7 km2, the Sud-Ouest borough is located southwest of downtown Montreal and is bordered to the northeast by the borough of Ville-Marie, to the south by Verdun, to the west by LaSalle, to the northwest by Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, and to the north by the city of Westmount. It is adjacent to the St. Lawrence River between Highway 15/20 and Route 112.
This borough, long among the most disadvantaged in Montreal, is made up of several neighbourhoods of very distinct character, but all of an essentially working-class nature. These are the Côte-Saint-Paul, Griffintown, Little Burgundy, Pointe-Saint-Charles, Saint-Henri and Ville-Émard neighbourhoods.
Although the Quartier de l'innovation is called a neighbourhood, it is a non-profit organization that has chosen part of the Sud-Ouest borough and a more limited part of the Ville-Marie borough as its urban laboratory. Straddling the Lachine Canal, this borough was the cradle of Canadian industry, a vocation that has strongly marked the built and cultural landscape.
Although these are not always in popular usage, the City of Montreal recognizes certain boundaries that form sociological neighbourhoods and reference neighbourhoods in housing, the latter of which come from the planning districts created by the former City of Montreal during the 1980s and are used for analytical needs in terms of housing.
